Michelle,
There is a trick to using SE16N. It isn't intuitive. Once you are in the transaction and have entered the table you wish to modify (and hit enter), you then have to type &sap_edit in the transaction field and hit enter. You'll see the message "SAP editing function is activated" when you do it right.
